Buying guide: Seals & Gaskets

The category covers crankshaft and camshaft seals, driveshaft and pinion seals, transmission and transfer case seals, valve cover and oil pan gaskets, intake and exhaust gaskets, O-rings, and the butyl and foam sealing strips used around doors, lamps and body panels.

About 3,200 parts are listed, split between seals, gaskets, sealing strips and O-rings. GM, Ford, Mopar and ACDelco all appear, and a large share of the listings are the small, cheap seals that stop a repair from coming back — the axle seal that was not replaced with the bearing, the O-ring that was reused on an A/C line.

Seal selection is about bore diameter, shaft diameter, lip type and material, not just outside diameter. A seal that is the right size but the wrong material will fail early on the fluid it meets, and installing one dry or with the lip rolled will leak from the first start. Gaskets are matched to the component and to the surface finish it seals against; where a gasket is listed with its retaining bolts or its sealant, the product page says so.
